Crayon Recipe

I have had several requests about our RAINBOW CRAYON activity. I am sure that there is a formal recipe somewhere out there, but I just came up with my own. This is what I did and it worked fine.

We just went through our old crayons that were broken and peeled any remaining paper off of them. I broke them up even smaller and then placed them in disposable tin trays. I filled the trays up about 3/4 of the way to the top. They have disposable muffin trays but I had "star" trays that we had picked up along the way at some point. Michael's or the Grocery stores sometimes have these disposable tins in different shapes to bake cupcakes (hearts, stars, depends on the holiday or season). I put the oven on 400 degrees and placed the tins on top of a cookie tray. I didn't really time them...maybe 15 minutes later, the crayons were all melted. I let them cool and about 2 hours later they were completely hard. They are a little waxy and rub off on your hands the first day. You should probably wait until the next day (or a few hours) to use them. When you take them out of the oven, they look black. Once you take them out of the tins, the bottom layer are the "rainbow" colors. I try to put a lot of light colored crayons mixed in with some of the darker colors so the darker colors don't take over.

Have fun and experiment. I figured we were going to throw the crayons out anyway.
